These homeowners wanted to create a pergola that would allow them to enjoy the beauty of their garden from a more sheltered location.
Palmer's Project Goals and Challenges
- To respect the client's budget, we wanted to reuse the materials in the existing IPE wood deck, which were in good shape structurally, but whose beauty was faded and worn.
- The pergola had to tie in to the architecture of the existing brick home and complement the natural beauty of the garden.
Solutions
- We successfully tied the supports of a rough-sawn, cedar-beamed pergola into the brick house.
- We pressure washed the existing IPE deck, sanded it, and then treated it with a wood preservative, which brought out the true beauty of the material. The color connected it visually to the existing stone work, and we color-coordinated the pergola with the revamped deck to link the entire space together.
The final result is a nice feature that effectively blocks the sun and adds architectural appeal amongst the homeowner's lush landscaping and striking roses.
