Tips for choosing the Right Contractor
Are
you considering a remodeling project or is your home in need of
repairs? Choosing the right contractor is one of the most important
decisions in a construction or repair project.
Here are a few things to consider in choosing a residential General Contractor...
- Verify
the name, address, telephone number and credentials of the General
Contractor. A North Carolina General Contractor must pass a
comprehensive test, meet certain financial requirements and have
letters of reference from three business affiliates.
- Ask for references and talk with former customers. Client referrals
have been a major contributing factor to the success of Palmer Custom
Builders.
- Ask about the Contractor’s experience. There is much to be said
about having worked in the field and having a thorough understanding of
the entire construction process. When field challenges arise,
experience pays big dividends to clients.
- Verify the General Contractor’s license and insurance information.
- Have a DETAILED contract, including a Right of Recession, which is required by law. Never sign a contract under pressure.
- Make sure you feel comfortable working with the individual and
Company. Establishing a good working relationship with your Contractor
is an asset for any project.
- Work with an established business. An established, successful
business is a result of quality work and good customer service. A
Company affiliated with a professional organization (i.e. NARI-
National Association of the Remodeling Industry) is an asset to the
Company and clients.
- When comparing quotes, be sure Contractors are bidding on the same
scope and quality of work. Discuss variations in the bids and beware of
any bid that is substantially lower than the others.
